Walking Somewhere

Walking across the Williamsburg Bridge, New York

A few months ago I walked across the Williamsburg Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan and took these pictures!

Walking Somewhere

I first walked across a bridge in NYC when I visited with a friend in 2021, and we walked across the Queensboro Bridge. It was so loud with the sound of cars and the occasional subway that we couldn’t talk to each other, and other people were passing by often enough that we just walked single file. But the view was lovely and the wind felt nice, and it was neat to pass above the entire width of Roosevelt Island.

I think the walk took like half an hour in total. By the time we’d made it to the other side my head felt like it had become filled up with that thunderous constant noise, and I felt a bit freed from my usual thoughts bouncing around. It’s hard to find a path uninterrupted by stoplights in Manhattan. The whole experience felt kind of trippy, like going through a portal or something, and after my visit (I did all the touristy things too) I was surprised to find myself thinking of that walk across the bridge as often as I did. So after moving to Manhattan a year-ish ago, I listed walking across more NY bridges as one of my to-dos in the city.

Thanks for reading my first post! :)
